Environmental Protection
One of the major environmental problems in the Republic is the pollution of the environment caused by industrial enterprises and factories. In 2019, Uzbekistan adopted the Environmental Protection Concept and the Environmental Education Development Concept for the period up to 2030. In the same year, the 2019–2028 Solid Household Waste Management Program and the 2019–2030 Strategy for the Transition to a Green Economy were also approved.
At Takhiatash Thermal Power Plant (Takhiatash TPP JSC), a number of organizational and technical measures have been implemented to protect the environment. Since early spring, ornamental trees (such as conifers) have been planted, and existing trees have been landscaped and maintained. Landscaping work has been carried out throughout the plant's territory. Flowers have been planted in all designated areas, and responsibility for their maintenance has been assigned to specific departments and personnel.
Special cells for industrial wastewater have been renovated and put into operation at the power plant. Water samples are taken quarterly from the existing piezometric wells and analyzed chemically. In addition, wastewater from the inlet and outlet channels is tested according to the approved schedule and is regularly monitored in accordance with environmental regulations.
Every Wednesday has been declared "Cleanliness Day" at the plant. Cleaning activities are carried out on a regular basis. Solid and household waste is removed from the plant's territory on time under a contract with a specialized waste management organization. Used lubricating oils and fluorescent lamps are safely disposed of to prevent environmental pollution.
The amount of harmful emissions released into the atmosphere has been significantly reduced due to the commissioning of two combined-cycle gas turbine units in 2021. In this system, the exhaust gas from the first gas turbine is reused to operate the second turbine, allowing the exhaust gases to be recycled and substantially reducing harmful emissions.
To monitor the impact of harmful emissions on nearby residential areas, two stationary environmental monitoring stations have been installed.
The State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Karakalpakstan regularly monitors atmospheric emissions and wastewater discharged from the power plant. Environmental monitoring is conducted continuously to ensure compliance with established environmental standards.
